Every Wednesday, bring along your latest crafty projects to work on over a drink and a chat. Knitting, sewing, crochet, needlework etc. All crafts and abilities welcome. A delightful selection of locally made handcrafted items and original gifts will be available at the East Preston Festival Committee’s Spring Craft Fair. There will also be a café set up throughout the day, serving home-made cakes, pastries, coffee, tea and soft drinks, and a raffle. Admission by donation to Festival Funds.

Israel Zangwill & Edith Ayrton – a talk by Shirley Zangwill (Conservative Hall, Sea Road East Preston BN16 1JN)

Last November a blue plaque was unveiled at the former East Preston home of this married couple who a century ago were renowned as campaigners for votes for women, a Jewish homeland and world peace. Both were writers and Israel Zangwill was known as the Jewish Dickens for such novels as “Children of the Ghetto”, which achieved international success. This talk about the couple is presented by their daughter-in-law Shirley Zangwill. All are welcome. Entry by ticket only, price £3, available from the end of February from Just Because and Seaview Stores, both in Sea Road, East Preston.

Sussex Scrapbook – an illustrated talk by Chris Horlock (Conservative Hall, Sea Road East Preston BN16 1JN)

Historian and writer Chris Horlock has amassed a vast amount of material about Sussex, its history and people. This illustrated talk, full of entertaining anecdotes and fascinating folklore, reveals strange happenings, hoaxes, witchcraft and some famous individuals not usually associated with Sussex. All welcome. Visitors £3, payable at the door; Preservation Society members free. The talk follows the official business of the Society’s AGM which begins at 7.15 pm.

East Preston Film Society will be screening 'Green Book'. Tickets are £6.00 each and will be on sale from 25th March at Just Because, Dizzy and Seaview Stores all in Sea Road. Raffle prizes kindly donated by local individuals and businesses. Refreshment kiosk organised by local teenager (Rachel). Spring Walk for Christian Aid (St Mary's Church East Preston on Vicarage Lane)

We invite you to walk with us on Sunday 12th May, to support the work of Christian Aid in Sierra Leone. We are walking this year because, Christian Aid Week (12th – 18th May), is focusing on the needs of women who require access to basic medical services and often have to walk long distances to reach their local clinic. Registering at 2pm at St Mary’s Church East Preston to start at 2.15pm, our 4 mile journey will follow the beautiful coastline towards the Bluebird Café where we will stop for refreshments and then head inland along the footpath by the Ferring Rife stream and Parson’s Walk, finishing back at St Mary’s Church. East Preston’s Workhouses - an illustrated talk by Margaret Gilbert (Miller Barn, East Preston Village Hall, Sea Road, East Preston BN16 1JN)

There was a time when East Preston was best known for its huge, grim Victorian workhouse, which until 1969 stood opposite the present day library. This was the second of two workhouses in the village, the first dating from 1792. In this illustrated talk, Margaret Gilbert will examine the history of East Preston’s workhouses as the centre for sick and poor relief over a wide area. This talk is part of the programme of the East Preston Festival. Admission £3 by ticket only (including Preservation Society members) from Festival Box Offices (May onwards). Unsold tickets may be available at the door.

Katherine Slay from the West Sussex Record Office explores the eventful 58 year history of the Chichester Festival Theatre using pictures and documents from the Record Office archive, a collection which was organised and catalogued thanks to a recent Heritage Lottery funded project. The Early Saxon Settlement of Sussex - a talk by James Sainsbury (Conservative Hall, Sea Road East Preston BN16 1JN)

James Sainsbury, Archaeologist at Worthing Museum, will reveal what recent excavations tell us about early Saxon settlements in Sussex, particularly in the area between the Arun and Adur rivers. His talk will be illustrated with ancient artefacts found in the pagan Saxon cemetery on Highdown Hill – vital evidence since there are no written accounts of the early settlements. In Kingston, East Preston’s isolated and quieter neighbour, two historic former homes of the Olliver and Candy families still stand amidst open fields, old flint cottages and dead-end tracks. Margaret’s talk looks at the history of this relatively untouched place, as well as the changing fortunes of its two great houses through the ages. Petworth Families - an illustrated talk by Anne Charlesworth (Conservative Hall, Sea Road East Preston BN16 1JN)

Before Petworth House was given to the National Trust in 1947, the house and park were owned by a succession of relatives: the powerful Percy family, Earls of Northumberland, then the Seymours and the Wyndhams, with the titles Earl of Egremont and Lord Leconfield. The current Lord and Lady Egremont still live in part of the house. This talk by Anne Charlesworth tells the stories of the Petworth families. Clandon Park, Surrey - an illustrated talk by Tom Dommett (Conservative Hall, Sea Road East Preston BN16 1JN)

Clandon Park, an early 18th century Palladian mansion in the care of the National Trust, suffered a devastating fire in 2015. This talk by Tom Dommett, Regional Archaeologist for the Trust, will consider the challenges of archaeological salvage, restoration and the rebuilding of the Grade I property using excavation combined with advanced survey techniques.
