The Romans in Sussex - a talk (Conservative Hall, Sea Road, East Preston)

After the Romans invaded us in AD 43, what was everyday life like in Sussex? A “Roman” way of life featured in places like Chichester, but ordinary peasants continued to live in their Iron Age huts while enjoying improvements in farming methods and in law and order. This illustrated talk by Dr David Rudling, Academic Director of the Sussex School of Archaeology, reveals the full story of those times. All are welcome – Preservation Society members free, visitors £3 (pay at the door).

The British Seaside Holiday – an illustrated talk (Conservative Hall, Sea Road, East Preston)

Jackie Marsh-Hobbs describes the development of seaside resorts and explains why the seaside holiday became so popular. Her talk, illustrated with early photographs, paintings and postcards, encompasses social history, art and architecture, as it explores British seaside holidays from Dr Russell’s sea water cures in Brighton in the 18th century to the piers, pools, beach huts and bandstands of our own childhoods. Sidesaddle Travels in England with Celia Fiennes (Conservative Hall, Sea Road, East Preston)

Celia Fiennes was an independent-minded lady, born in 1662, who travelled on horseback around England from her early twenties to the age of about fifty. Staying with relatives, friends and sometimes complete strangers, she noted the industries of each area and the meals she ate. This talk by Dr Janet Pennington reveals a travelogue from a female perspective, at a time when travel was uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous. All welcome. William Penn: the Sussex Connection – a talk (Conservative Hall, Sea Road, East Preston)

William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, one of the earliest states in the USA, took hundreds of West Sussex people with him to populate the New World. Martin Hayes, County Local Studies Librarian, will analyse Penn’s life and relate it to the historical context of West Sussex in the 17th century. He will also tell us about the many West Sussex places with links to Penn, some of which can be visited today. All welcome. Visitors £3 (pay at the door), EPKPS members free.
