Frosty craft ideas for children, from The Creation Station

The Creation Station

How long before you hear this familiar cry in your house over the Winter holidays?? ... "Mum/Dad, I’m BORED!!!!"

Well, to keep the boredom gremlins at bay, here are a few unusual crafty ideas from The Creation Station to keep kids of all ages amused!!

1) Hand and Footprint Reindeer Christmas Decoration

2) Make a Huge Frosty Snowman in the Kitchen

Look in Yellow Pages under Magnets for printing firms that produce fridge magnet cards for companies. Or try art suppliers for magnetic strips that just stick onto the back of card. If you cannot get magnets, BluTak works just as well!!!

Colour in card, or use coloured card to cut out the different shapes that make up a snowman - his body, head, eyes, nose, buttons, hat etc. Make them BIG!!! You can even use all the cardboard packaging from Christmas presents, or Christmas cards!!

Attach the shapes onto magnets strips and create a super-size snowman in your kitchen – if you have space on your fridge!!! If you are using BluTak, a door is a great place for your snowman to live. You could jumble all the parts of the snowman up, and have races to see who is quickest at putting him back together!! Or create some "odd part out" cards to add in (e.g. eyelashes, an umbrella, a frog, a strawberry for a nose... anything you like!!) and see who spots the "odd part out" first!!

3) Frosty Snowman and Sweet Little Igloo!

Have loads of fun making a frosty scene - which can be eaten afterwards!!! (But do not eat cloves or ear buds!!)

  • For base: paper plate, aluminium foil
  • For igloo: sugar cubes, snow cement
  • For snowman: marsmallows, ear buds or chocolate matchsticks, cloves
  • For snow cement: Icing sugar, water

  1. Make the base; Cover plate with aluminium foil.
  2. Start making the igloo. Mix together the icing sugar and a little water to make a paste. Put the snow cement on the base and push down on the sugar cubes to make the snow cement squish between them - make it really squishy!! Layer snow cement on top of the sugar cubes and continue to do this to create your igloo.
  3. Make your snowman. Take three marshmallows; join them together with an ear bud or a chocolate matchstick. Use cloves for eyes and buttons. Attach marshmallows for arms with are buds or use chocolate matchsticks. Attach your snowman to the base, next to the igloo with the frosting.

4) Frozen Ice balls

Fill some balloons about half full with water. Tie a knot in the balloon. Pop in the freezer for a day. Take them out and peel off the rubber.

The frozen balls are great for an outdoor game of boules!!! Or try sticking them together with salt, or looking at them with a torch in the dark. Pop one in the bath when your little one is there as a surprise!

You can also try adding coloured liquid to the balloon, or a small toy, for extra fun!!

5) Nature Trail Thank You Cards

When it's time to get out of the house for some fresh air, this is a great way to get the kids to go on a nature hunt whilst walking and exercising.

You will need:

  • some leaves and natural objects
(cabbage leaves are great to include, so raid the fridge too!!)
  • paper or cards
  • brushes/sponge

Pick some different shaped leaves and any other interesting items you might find on a walk. Paint the leaf/item, and print onto paper. Try painting both sides of the leaf and pressing it down. Do remember it doesn't have to look like a leaf when it is printed. If you really want it to look like one - do your own! Children love the action and are not worried about making it look perfect! (It’s good for the confidence to just have a go and enjoy it)

Print them onto card, write on the card with a gold pen and use them as thank you letters for all those wonderful Christmas gifts!!!
